Ladies who Lunch, Stepping out of the Comfort Zone, and There is No Such Thing as Coincidence

A few years ago, I had the happy circumstance of reconnecting with an old friend. We had lost touch for many years, then happened to reconnect through a friend of a friend. I won’t go into the entire story, but it was really neat. Not only did we reestablish our friendship, but also we did it right at the time that she was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Having survived colon cancer myself, I was able to be supportive of her during that time.  As a Christian, I firmly believe that there is no such thing as coincidence. The Lord specifically put us back together at that particular time in her life.

We have emailed sporadically since then, and have FINALLY made plans to see each other this weekend. She has another friend that she is bringing with her, and the two of them are also old friends of a good friend of mine here in town. So the four of us will meet here for lunch on Saturday.  First, the tablescape, then my thoughts about the day.

I have tweaked the same table from both the harvest and the Halloween tablescapes. I used the harvest-colored runner from Dollar General, the sage green placemats from Fred’s, and the square taupe plates from Wal-Mart. The green Dollar Tree goblets with the harvest-themed charms also remain in place from last week.

Then I added the square Friendly Village salad plates. I chose them because the colors fit in with the fall theme, plus I just love the Friendly Village. I left the San Remo flatware from the Halloween tablescape.

I have again used the fall leaf napkins from The Napkin Lady.  The acorn napkin rings look good with this table.

I had to use the cute little Dollar General pots. I am planning broccoli cheese soup. I wanted to use these little pots so badly that I put soup on the menu!

I finished off with my candle holders and some of my fruit and vegetable salt and pepper shakers. This is not all of them; I just wanted a few for decoration.

So on to the menu and why this day will be stepping out of my comfort zone. I am not a terrible cook, but not a real accomplished one either. I’ve never really been one to cook for others or to enjoy entertaining. My son knows my insecurity in this area and challenged me to work on it a few years ago. His reasoning was that the nest was empty and that his dad is a good sport about being a guinea pig, so why not try it? He even gave us a cooking school lesson at Viking, which we loved.

So I’ve been working on it and doing a little better. I’ve gotten a little more adventurous and a little more healthy with my cooking.  I actually found the broccoli cheese soup recipe on line and just jumped in and tried it. Surprise: it was actually good. I still can’t believe that I actually made something like that and that we liked it. Saturday will be the real test when I fix it for my friends.

I won’t go into all the psychological evaluations behind my feelings about my cooking, but I assure you that there is good reason for it. Saying stuff like, “But you’re a good cook,” makes me feel no better. People who say that have maybe had one thing that I fixed for a church supper or something.

But, as I said, I am working on it. This Saturday will be WAAAAAY out of my comfort zone, and I am a nervous wreck about it. But I am looking forward to seeing my friend for the first time in almost thirty years.

I will report here after the visit and let you know how it went. In the meantime, send prayers my way for me to step bravely out of my comfort zone and deal with whatever comes up.

  1. I’m sure your meal will be delicious, because we are typically our own worst critics. Just know that your friends will not be there for the food, but for the fellowship and friendship. And please, please, please, don’t apologize for your feelings of inadequacy in the cooking arena. As someone who has many friends who spend the entire meal making apologies for this or that, it makes guests feel uncomfortable. We aren’t sure if you are fishing for compliments or if there really is something wrong with what you prepared. Just smile and say “Thank you” for the compliments you are sure to get! You are going to have a wonderful time, and your tablescape looks wonderful. I adore those little pots.

That is very good advice. Don’t worry; I don’t ever say anything during a meal. I just think it a lot to myself! Your kind words are very appreciated.

I just spent a few days with a very old friend who I haven’t seen in some time and it was wonderful. Hope your experience is the same. Don’t worry about the cooking. I think most people appreciate the effort more than the food.

  3. Madonna says:

I understand your concerns, but keep in mind they are not there for the food. Your tablescape is beautiful and I am sure by your post you are a good person. The food will only be tertiary. While I am not very confident either I try to keep it simple. Barefoot Contessa said to make one thing and buy the rest. I try to make wow foods, meaning little work with wow results, a beautiful table and a small bouquet of flowers and your soup, sounds like a party to me. A scoop of quality ice cream on a brownie doesn’t hurt anything either. I hope you will post a follow-up.

  4. I love your table centerpiece, so elegant and I love to have dinner with this table dining sets.

  5. What a great time you will have catching up with friends. I think you are very brave for stepping out of your comfort zone in the cooking department. I’m an ‘OK’ cook and so I completely understand! It will be fine and just try to relax and enjoy! Hugs, Linda

  6. Sheryl says:

Broccoli cheese soup sounds like a perfect choice for this time of year, and a perfect choice for a gathering of friends, old and new. The care you put into your tablescape will make your guests feel welcome, and the cute little soup crocks will add to the fun. I’m sure all of you will have a wonderful time together! Enjoy!

  7. I am sure your get together will be wonderful and the food will be just fine! Your table looks great. Thank you for sharing at TTF and have a fun weekend!

  8. Yup, I believe He puts us in people’s paths and them in ours. You never know what impact you will have on someones life. May your lunch and visit be blessed and most of all joyous. (())

  9. Whatever happened is sure for the right reasons. It’s wonderful that you guys reconnected with each other.

    Have an enjoyable Saturday!

  10. Your table looks lovely, and I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time re-connecting with your old friend.

  11. I miss friends around the table. If I could I would gather all of my bloggy friend and we would have a wonderful lunch. Thank you for joining in the fun at the Thursday Favorite Things hop. Happy Tuesday wishes xo P.S. sorry I’m so late visiting 🙂

  12. Kathy says:

Your tablescape is beautiful and frugal at the same time, I love how you’ve made subtle changes to adapt to the different situations. I completely agree, there are no coincidences. God definitely placed you two together at the right time! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
    Kathy

  13. Your table is so fall perfect. How wonderful to reconnect with old friends. There is nothing like the comfort of someone you have known forever.

  14. Beth says:

Good luck, Bev! Your table is so pretty.

  15. Hey I’m exactly like you! I can cook, I do okay, but I lack confidence about putting on big meals or meals for special occasions! I think I expect too much perfection so I fear it too much! It can also be a lot of work- and I tend to want to avoid that! I’m sure the bottom line will be having your friends visit and share some quality time together and the dining will just be one element of the whole day! Enjoy!

  16. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things hop xo

  17. I remember another blogger feeling a lot of trepidation about her cooking skills before a big dinner. Everything turned out great for her, and I have faith that it will for you, too, because you really have a lot of heart in this luncheon. Broccoli-cheese soup is so good, and with the weather turning cooler, it will be a hit! I make a broccoli-cheese soup to which I add shredded chicken and sliced mushrooms. Very hearty! Hmmmm….I think I just figured out what I want for lunch tomorrow! 🙂 Your table is looking good, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you. Best wishes for a successful luncheon all around, and super best wishes to your friend as she carries on her battle.
